As high school students, we all expect college to be the best time of our lives.
No parent authority, joining a fraternity/soroity, meeting new people, and partying.
We might have got that impression by watching too much "American Pie".
But from what i've experienced, college can cause more pain than pleasure.
This is called college depression.
For example, financial problems are a major cause of stress for some students.
Unless you come from an wealthy family money shouldn't be an issue, but for others
who doesn't have to learn how to manage a job, studying, and classes. Seem
like a lot of work? thats only the beginning.
Another case of college depression is dealig with the loss of familiar. For
most students college is the first experience ever leaving home. When things
become tough, we can't run back to our family and friends for comfort like
we normally do. Instead we're surrounded by unfamilir faces which can cause
loneliness, homesickness, and separation.
Mid terms and finals are what students fear the most. It can be a real
mood killer when the instructor mention it. Facing financial problems,
homesickness, and loneliness while preparing yourself for the biggest
of your life can be very stressful.
There are counlors for students who are facing these kind of problems,
some students find these counlors helpful, others don't. In order to prevent
college depression you have to be fully prepared mentally and physically.
For all the high school students who think college is all fun and games,
